Harvest time at the Farmers’ Market

Medicine Hat, AB – With harvest season underway, the Medicine Hat Exhibition and Stampede is reaping what it has sown with plenty of fresh food on offer from dozens of local farmers and ranchers on sale during Saturday’s Farmers’ Market and Wednesday’s Market in the Park.

Doreen Gunderson, Farmers’ Market coordinator, said a cornucopia of fresh produce is coming in to the Cypress Centre each week.

“We are getting into fall and, as you can see, there is more and more every week,” said Gunderson.

One crop which has fallen short has been corn following a hail storm knocking out a good portion of this year’s crop.

“We get a lot but you have to be here first thing in the morning and it’s usually sold out by 10:30 at the latest,” said Gunderson.

One of the things Gunderson stresses is a big difference in buying produce from the Farmer’s Market is, “you actually get to meet the person who does the product, whose picked it, baked it, crafted it – they’re always there behind the table.”

The Farmers’ Market runs on Saturdays until Oct. 5 with Market in the Park held on Wednesdays until Sept. 11.

Market in the Park will be hosting a corn roast fundraiser in support of HALO on Aug. 28.
