New bookstore set to open in support of APARC

Medicine Hat, AB – This fall, a new bookstore will open its doors in downtown Medicine Hat.

And it will be supporting the Alberta Pound and Rescue Centre.

“I’ve always had a love and passion for books. And I also had a love and passion for animals obviously. And I decided there has to be a way to put those two together.” Said Samual Sandidge, the chief operations officer with APARC.

Profits made from “The Page & Whisker” will be donated to APARC and literacy programs in Southern Alberta.

The store will sell gently used books and have cats available for adoption freely roaming.

“It’s going to be one of those bookstores that I hope everybody is going to be able to relax in.” Sandidge described. “Lots of beautiful shelving and some great chairs to hang out with the cats that are going to be free-roaming. And we really hope everybody has a good time.”

Sandidge says that having this store will cause more stability in funding.

“We have a lot of animals that come through our doors and some of them aren’t the healthiest.” He explained. “We really need funds for that. And I think that with the bookstore we’d be able to provide the shelter with the much-needed funding for long term. Not just short term like fundraisers would.”

Staff from APARC will run the store and are hopeful to get volunteers out to the store to help.

“Because we have cats and books and just so many things that we gotta do. And of course, man-hours are always limited. So as much help as we can get, we’d really appreciate it” Sandidge said.

Sandidge is hopeful after renovations the store will be able to open before Halloween.
