HARTLAND, AB — Medicine Hat’s Ryan Hodgins signed off on an opening-round 72 to sit in a tie for 48th at the Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championships at Covered Bridge Golf and Country Club.

At even par, Hodgins is 10 strokes back of defending champion and leader Christopher Vandette of Beavonsfield, QC, who tore it up with a 62.

Hodgins dropped one of his three birdies on the 18th hole, putting him inside the top 50 heading into the second round on Tuesday.

The Medicine Hat Golf and Country Club member is on the final stretch of what’s been a tremendously successful 2019 campaign. After placing seventh at the Alberta Junior Boys Championship, which qualified him for the Canadian event, he finished T8 at a weather-shortened Alberta Men’s Amateur Championship.

It’s a return to the national-caliber event for the 17-year-old, having missed the cut on his home course last year. Hodgins says he’s using the missed cut as a learning experience to benefit him for this week’s test in New Brunswick.

Mitch Bach of CHAT Sports caught up with Hodgins before he flew out to hear more about the state of his game, and what he hopes to accomplish in his second trip to the Canada-wide event.
