Mavs secure playoff berth, top Giants 6-4

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Make it back-to-back victories for the Medicine Hat Mavericks.

Freddy Walker and Colling Klingensmith each batted in two runs, helping the reigning league champions capture a 6-4 victory over the Fort McMurray Giants at Athletic Park on Friday night.

The victory, Medicine Hat’s seventh in the last eight games, officially clinches a playoff spot.

The Mavericks maintain their one-game lead over the Lethbridge Bulls for second place in the WCBL’s Western Division, while the Fort McMurray Giants fall into a tie for the final playoff spot with Edmonton.

Medicine Hat improves to 29-22 on the campaign, and can reach the 30-win plateau with a series-sweep victory over Fort Mac.

Chase Adkison’s bat was the hottest for the Giants with three hits, however wasn’t able to secure any RBI’s or runs.

The third and final contest of the series begins at 7:05 p.m. from Athletic Park on Saturday.
