MEDICINE HAT, AB — Two months ago, the Medicine Hat Public School Division introduced full-time kindergarten for its students.

The first day of school is on September 3, and there’s still room left to enrol.

The program introduced in June offers full-time five day a week kindergarten classes for students.

“The programming would be set up in a child centred play based environment so learning is fun, and they really have access to lots of early literacy, numeracy, social and emotional development, motor skills,” says Tracy Hensel, associate superintendent with student services for the MHPSD. “All of that can happen in that really child centred environment.”

Many parents showed interest initially, with half of families with the school division deciding to use the program.

The program is full in some schools across the City, but the Hensel still encourages parents to inquire about enrolment.

“We have some schools where because of where they’re geographically located in the city, those programs would be fuller than others, but definitely have room to accommodate families should they still choose to,” says Hensel. “They should still inquire and we’ll see what we can do.”

Hensel encourages parents to visit the division’s office.

“People are welcome to come over to Medicine Hat School Division office between 8 and 3, we have lots of information, we can answer all of your questions, you can get yourself signed up so the schools are ready to accept them when they come back in August.”
