SWIFT CURRENT, SK — Strong pitching and fielding led the Medicine Hat Mavericks to a second straight victory on Thursday night.

Garrett Nicholson pitched seven shutout innings, allowing just two hits, as the Mavericks snuck out a 2-1 victory over the Swift Current 57s at Mitchell Field.

Nicholson, who earned his fourth straight victory, also struck out six batters.

Collin Klingensmith followed up a three-hit performance in Edmonton by going two-for-four at the dish with a solo-home run in the fourth. Freddy Walker batted in Cameron Pope’s game-winning run in the seventh with an RBI-single.

Junior Pimentel picked up the save, striking out his final batter in his only inning pitched.

Medicine Hat continues to gain ground in clinching a playoff position, now 2.5 games up on the Edmonton Prospects for third place. They’re 3.5 games inside the cut line, with Fort McMurray outside in fifth.

The Mavericks will look for a third straight win on Friday, as they head back home for a three-game series against the Melville Millionaires.
