Curbside recycling pickup a success in Medicine Hat

Medicine Hat, AB – A year ago Medicine Hat introduced curbside pick up after they were struggling to keep recyclables out of the landfill.

Now a year later, the city is seeing an increase in recycling by almost a third since it’s launch last July.

Since then, a total of a 3,120 tonnes of recycling has been collected.

Which is a 777-tonne increase from the previous year.

The superintendent of solid waste, Shane Briggs credits the public with the success of the program.

“They’re the ones that overall make it a successful program. So it was just their response to the program.” He said.

Briggs is hopeful that they will be able to extend the program over the next number of years.

He says the city has no set plans though.

“We take it case by case basis. If it’s a fourplex maybe service by a bin right now and we will certainly look at that.” He continued. “But right now there’s no future plan for condos or apartments.”

Briggs says that although numbers have dipped at the four self drop off depots, the city plans on keeping all four open.
