MEDICINE HAT, AB — A Medicine Hat man charged with first degree murder and extortion in connection with a 2017 murder will go to trial next year.

A 10-week jury trial was set for Robert Hoefman in the Medicine Hat Court of Queen’s Bench on Friday. The trial is currently scheduled to begin September 28.

Hoefman, 57, was charged with first degree murder in January 2018 in connection with the death of James Satre.

The 63-year-old’s body was found near Mil Street Southeast and Smelter Avenue Southeast on October 11, 2017.

Hoefman was also charged with one charge of extortion in November 2017. Police allege the extortion and Satre’s murder are linked.

In May, a preliminary hearing determined there is enough evidence for Hoefman to go to trial. Details from the preliminary hearing are under a publication ban.

Hoefman has not yet entered a plea, according to the court. He remains in custody.
