Cervantes throws complete game in 8-2 victory in Swift

SWIFT CURRENT, SK — In the hours following the WCBL’s announcement of All-Star Game rosters, the Medicine Hat Mavericks pumped out an all-star performance in Swift Current.

Jaymon Cervantes threw a complete game, allowing six hits and one earned run as the Mavs ousted the 57s 8-2 at Mitchell Field on Wednesday night.

Cervantes, who earned the victory in the Mavericks championship clincher last season, also struck out four batters and allowed just two walks.

Medicine Hat has now stretched its win streak to four games — the teams longest of the season. They’re 13-16 on the campaign and remain fifth in the WCBL’s Western Division.

Swift Current continues to jostle for first place in the East, but fall to 16-10 and three games back of the leading Regina Red Sox.

Newly acquired infielder Taylor Wright continued his hot start to the summer campaign, batting in three runs while going 2-for-4 at the dish. Nolan Rattai, one of three members of the Mavericks named to the WCBL’s Eastern Team for the All-Star Game on Sunday, collected two RBI, matching Sal Rodriguez’ mark.

But while much of the night was full of positives across the line-up, the Mavericks may have lost a critical piece. Austin Sojka, who’s expected to join Rattai as an all-star, left the game in the fourth inning after running into the end wall while attempting to make a catch. Pitcher Flynn Ridley is the third and final Mav to be named an all-star, but wasn’t needed thanks to Cervantes unruly performance.

Medicine Hat returns to action Thursday night hosting the Edmonton Prospects in a special match dedicated to the Mavericks players born in the USA. To recognize the 4th of July, the Mavs are wearing special themed jerseys, laced with the colours of the American flag. Game time is 7:05 p.m. from Athletic Park.
