Alberta to support Saskatchewan’s carbon tax appeal

EDMONTON, AB — The Alberta government has announced plans to support Saskatchewan’s federal carbon tax appeal.

On Tuesday, the government filed a notice of intervention in the case, which is expected to be heard by the Supreme Court of Canada in December,

“We are proud to stand together with Saskatchewan to fight the federal carbon tax,” said Premier Jason Kenney in a statement. “The federal government’s scheme punishes Albertans for heating their homes and driving to work. There is a better way to reduce emissions than this impractical and unconstitutional tax grab.”

In May, the Saskatchewan Court of Appeal ruled in a split decision that the federal government’s carbon tax is constitutional and establishing minimum national standards for a price on greenhouse gas emissions falls under federal jurisdiction. The Saskatchewan government announced it planned to appeal the decision to the Supreme Court of Canada.
