Habitat For Humanity Southern Alberta announces new build project in Southlands

“The city really helped us out,” said Cal Nordlee, co-chair of Habitat for Humanity’s Medicine Hat Regional Community. “They put $70,000, which is their normal half-and-half towards the purchase of this lot. We’re going to build a duplex here for two families.”

The last Habitat for Humanity build in Medicine Hat took place in 2013, building a home in the Flats. The delay, Nordlee says, was to raise funds for the project.

According to Habitat for Humanity, families who will be moving into the homes will contribute 500 volunteer hours as part of their partnership with the organization, and will purchase the home through the organization’s affordable mortgage program. Mortgage payments are geared towards the income of the family, and will never exceed 25 per cent of their total household income, according to Habitat for Humanity.

Nordlee says the goal is to help make home ownership more affordable for families.

“We can give people a chance to own a home, or to live in a home, have home ownership, build some equity, and really just participate in the community,” he said. “Everybody participates. These are the same people that have kids, they’re in hockey, soccer, you name it, and it’s just a great, great way to put down roots.”

Nordlee says construction is expected to begin in the spring, with the homes being move-in ready by Thanksgiving.
