MEDICINE HAT, AB – A thrilling wrap up to the 2018 Little League season for hundreds of kids over the weekend, as Medicine Hat played host for the 2018 Minor AA Provincial Tournament.

Teams were split into Tier I and Tier II divisions, with provincial gold medals on the line at Lion’s Park on Monday.

The Tier I final saw a pair of undefeated clubs match up, with the Cochrane Crush and Foothills Rockies battling after three days of games.

It was a back-and-forth tilt until the middle innings, but Cochrane was able to score three straight runs late to pick up a 7-4 victory and take the provincial title.

Riley Boychuk closed out the game for the Crush and said the team never lost focus, even while the game was tied at 4-4.

“Our team just played amazing today,” said Boychuk. “We just played so good this year and it was a team effort today.”

It was an all-Calgary meeting meanwhile between the Centennial All-Stars and Fish Creek Cardinals in the Tier II final earlier in the day.

Fish Creek scored three runs in the first inning alone and used some stellar pitching late to run the table and win the provincial title by a 6-2 final score.

Cardinals catcher and infielder Caleb Furuya said throughout the tournament his teammates lifted each other up.

“We worked together as a team and we kept cheering each other on,” said Furuya. “It was fun, I got to meet new friends. It was just awesome.”

As for Medicine Hat’s two AA teams, they both finished the tournament out of medal contention.
