MEDICINE HAT, AB – A brand new lawn made all the difference for the Medicine Hat Lawn Bowling Club over the weekend, as they hosted their Memorial Triples Tournament.

It was the second time Medicine Hat hosted the 15-team tournament, but the first since they replaced their green over the spring with the help of Connaught Golf Course.

A number of local teams took part in the friendly tournament, while squads from Edmonton and Lethbridge made the trip down to the ‘Gas City.’

In the ‘A’ final, it was the Edmonton team of Tony Spencer, Barbara Spencer, and Monika Pachan winning the championship trophy over Lethbridge’s Al McGarty, Bob Edmiston, and Ute Edmiston.

Tony said the new green helped their squad gain some needed consistency to win the Memorial championship.

“It’s just amazing that we were able to do it, especially in Medicine Hat as it’s been fabulous coming to these greens,” said Spencer. “And, it’s just exciting to win this competition.”

While teams put on their game faces while the competition was going on, all 15 teams celebrated together in one of the largest friendly tournaments in the province.

Medicine Hat club president Bill Cuthill said their goal is to grow the sport and added events like these do just that.

“We’re all one big family and we all try to do the same thing,” said Cuthill. “That is to encourage people to come and play the game of bowls really.”

Medicine Hat’s membership levels were down to just eight members a few years ago, but they’ve since re-built their numbers to reach close to 50 competitors.

Cuthill said the progress of the club has been fantastic, but would still like to see a few more younger players take up the sport.

“We would like to get some young guys up here to learn how to bowl and get a youth team going,” he said. “Hopefully, that will happen next year probably. But, we’d like everybody in Medicine Hat to know that this place is open to anybody.”

The ‘B’ final was won by the team of May Dalziel, Sue Davison, and Francis Yo over the squad of Richard Turner, Kathy Kerr, and Mike Evans.

Marlen Shustov, Anne Hammond, and Margaret McDonald picked up the win in the ‘C’ final against the team of Wes Bresee, Jeff Desjarlais, and Pat Dennis.

And it was a Medicine Hat winner in the ‘D’ division with Cuthill, Jim Clegg, and Mary Clegg taking down Inabelle Lutz, Lori Durdle, and Ann Boutkan.
