City begins delivering recycling carts to homes

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Residential recycling carts are now being delivered to homes in Medicine Hat.

The first deliveries began Tuesday in Crescent Heights. Full delivery of the 23,000 carts will be staggered across all solid waste collection zones, and could take up to seven weeks to complete.

“You may not receive your cart while a neighbour has already received their cart,” said Brian Murphy, general manager of environmental utilities with the city. “We want people to not be concerned if they don’t receive their cart immediately.”

Blue recycling carts can be used once they arrive at the home, and are set out on the same collection day as household and yard waste.

Murphy adds the staggered roll out will allow the city and Can Pak Environmental to ensure the operation runs smoothly once every home receives the cart.

“Like any new program, there’s always a chance for learning as we go along, so we ask for everyone’s patience and understanding as both the city and Can Pak ramp up our operations for the blue recycling carts,” he said.

In addition to the carts, an information package is also being delivered to homes, providing information about how to use the cart, what can be recycled, and what residents need to do to prepare the items for recycling.

The monthly cost of the recycling program is less than $6 per month, and will be included on utility bills.
