Medicine Hat ringette teams dominate at Ed Horvath Tournament

MEDICINE HAT, AB – If there were any doubts concerning the strength of Medicine Hat’s ringette community, those were quickly wiped away at the Ed Horvath Interprovincial Ringette Tournament over the weekend.

Finals running at rinks around the city on Sunday, with Medicine Hat clubs in the finals of every single division.

In the U-16 division, it was the Medicine Hat Mission going toe-to-toe with the South Calgary Blues with gold medals on the line.

The Mission built up a lead and were able to add some insurance with an empty net goal, winning the Ed Horvath championship by a 6-4 final.

Even more impressive for the Medicine Hat team is that they were able to win the championship in their first tournament of the season.

Captain Kennedy Lanigan said it took a lot to keep their excitement in check, especially in the final few minutes of regulation.

“We were all just so excited that the clock was finally ticking down,” said Lanigan. “We just wanted to get possession and get it out, just to make sure we weren’t panicking at all, just to keep everybody calm and everything.”

While the Mission were winning their home title, the Medicine Hat Penguins were taking on the Regina Ringers in the U-19 division final.

The Penguins were able to rally from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to knot the game at 2-2, but the Ringers were able to score twice in the dying minutes to secure a 4-3 win over Medicine Hat.

Medicine Hat threw 58 shots at the Regina net, but weren’t able to find the equalizer for a second time.

Penguins captain Erica Brost said while it’s a difficult lesson to learn, she’s glad to represent Medicine Hat in front of her friends and family.

“This will be my last year, so that’s kind of sad,” said Brost. “But, [the] home tournament is always the best I feel. Just all the fans, grandparents, parents, friends that come out and watch, and it makes it a pretty good experience.”

U-12 C final – Medicine Hat Ice Breakers over Frostbite 3-0

U-14 A final – Medicine Hat Tropics over Bow View ACDC 6-1

Open B final – Medicine Hat Smash over Absolut 3-2 (OT)

U-12 B final – Medicine Hat Edge over NW El Pase Libre 8-1

U-14 B final – Medicine Hat Rogue over Medicine Hat Impact 4-0
