Adult only buildings will have to allow children come January, with some exceptions
MEDICINE HAT, AB. – Alberta is still the only province to still allow adult only apartments. The province has introduced a bill updating the Human Rights Code, changing the way adult only apartments operate. They will no longer be able to ban children as of January 2018.
In Medicine Hat, the change will affect some residents like Laverne Noble. She has owned a condo in the River Ridge Estates building for the past year. The condo board has a bylaw restricting residents to be at least 40 years of age. Noble said having an age minimum helps bring the residents closer together.
“We are able to develop a community in the building like this. We can do things together, we are like minded people at this particular age,” she explained.
