Several local badminton players headed to provincial championships

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Several local badminton players have qualified for provincials.

The Alberta Schools Athletic Association wrapped up the South Zone badminton championships Wednesday night, with a full slate of action at the Family Leisure Centre and Medicine Hat High School. The first and second place athletes in each division qualify for provincials in Red Deer next week.

Among local competitors, James Nguyen from Medicine Hat High School took home first place on the senior boys side, topping Landon French from St. Mary’s. Nguyen, an exchange student from Vietnam, is considered a favourite at provincials.

Jordyn Fournier from Monsignor McCoy High School took home a gold medal in the junior girls singles competition, beating Nicole Madore from Chinook High School in the final.

Sierra Zukowski, also from McCoy qualified for provincials with a silver medal in the senior girls category, losing to Chinook’s Janelle Bykowski in the final. Courtney Lagasse, also from McCoy, took home the bronze.

In the doubles category, Eagle Butte High School will send two teams to Red Deer. Triston Duchscherer and Lexi Waldbauer came away with a second place medal in junior mixed doubles, after falling to Christian Monahan and Sophie Simek from W.R. Myers.

Trevor Mickey and Katie Arnott also came away with silver in the Senior Girls Double Category. Garrett Myles and Courtney Spetz from Chinook won first place.

Provincials run May 5-6 in Red Deer at Notre Dame High School, Lindsay Thurber Comprehensive High School and Hunting Hills High School.
