REDCLIFF, AB — A 34-year-old man and 29-year-old woman are facing charges following alleged thefts in Cypress County earlier this week.

On Wednesday, officers in Redcliff joined with Saskatchewan RCMP members and RCMP police dog services regarding reports of two stolen vehicles and a robbery in the Hilda and Schuler area and into Saskatchewan. Two people were arrested, and multiple items of stolen property were recovered, including two stolen pickup trucks, a trailer, an ATV and two saddles.

According to a news release, some of the items were taken from Medicine Hat, while others were stolen in the area of Hilda and Schuler. Officers have spent much of the week investigating stolen vehicles, assaults, robbery and break and enters in the county.

Tyler Gregory Otterson of Medicine Hat has been charged with one count of robbery, two counts of assault with a weapon, one count of possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, one count of flight from police, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order and one count of failing to comply with recognizance.

The 29-year-old woman, who cannot be named until charges have been sworn against her, is facing one charge of possession of stolen property over $5,000.

RCMP say the incidents serve as a reminder to keep their homes safe,

“I know people out there are worried about their property out there, they’re worried about suspicious vehicles, but one thing I’d really love to encourage is securing their property, securing their buildings, but most importantly, securing their vehicles,” Said Staff Sgt. Sean Maxwell with Redcliff RCMP. “If people are leaving keys inside vehicles and leaving vehicles unlocked, it provides a ready means of somebody taking over another vehicle.”

Maxwell says property crime tends to fluctuate in the county, and is hoping incidents will be on the downswing following this incident.

He also thanked residents for their assistance and tips which led to the arrests.

Otterson remains in custody and makes his next appearance in Medicine Hat provincial court on Tuesday. The woman has been released to appear in Medicine Hat on May 31.
