Weather causing delays to park openings in city

MEDICINE HAT – Bad weather is leading to a delay in the opening of some sports facilities and parks in Medicine Hat.

The city said the colder than normal temperatures and soggy conditions have them about two weeks behind schedule for opening and spring clean up activities.

Field maintenance including grooming, sweeping and irrigation start up is delayed.

The clean up of leaves, tree debris, turf repairs and landscaping is delayed in parks like Echo Dale, the Gas City Campground and Hillside Cemetery.

The city says frost levels in the ground are causing issues with water services meaning irrigation systems can’t be turned on.

Athletic Park is one of the sports facilities impacted by the delays. Water can’t be turned on to the buildings as the overnight temperatures are still too low that it would put the infrastructure at risk of freezing and bursting.

The city says it will likely take another two weeks to get back on track. Addressing sport fields and major parks will be the first priority when conditions improve, with smaller neighbourhood parks following.
