MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The Rotary Music Festival has a 63 year long tradition in Medicine Hat.

Chair Don Davis said over the past two weeks speakers, musicians and singers of all ages performed for adjudicators to showcase their talents at Medicine Hat College.

“The students and competitors are really very friendly and supportive of each other,” he said. “It’s really a remarkable group of students we have.”

Davis said over the years they have seen a shift in the popularity of the different categories competitors are entering in. He mention guitar has had a decline but some other categories have taken off.

“Strings are coming back,” he said. “Musical theatre and vocal is going gang busters.”

The festival wrapped up last night with the Stars of the Festival awards and special performances. Davis said he was extremely please with how well the festival was ran and the talent we have in Medicine Hat and the surrounding area.

“In music festivals the purpose is not to gain a prize nor to defeat a rival but to pace one another on the road to excellence,” he said.

The qualifying competitors will be advancing to the provincial competition in Edmonton, AB. in late spring.
