OYEN, AB —An 18-year-old Oyen man is facing child pornography charges following an investigation involving Medicine Hat’s Internet Child Exploitation (ICE) Unit.

Austin Palmer, 18, was arrested in Oyen on March 5 by members of the Ice Unit and RCMP.

The investigation began on February 28 after RCMP were contacted by a parent of a young woman. The parent was concerned about messages between her daughter and an adult man on her daughter’s cell phone.

During Palmer’s arrest, officers executed a search warrant of the residence, seizing a number of electronic devices. Child pornography images were allegedly found during a forensic preview. Technicians will conduct a full scan of the devices.

Palmer was remanded into custody. He has been charged with two counts of luring a child, and one count each of possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, distributing child pornography and failure to comply with a probation order.

Palmer is scheduled to appear in Medicine Hat provincial court on March 20.
