MEDICINE HAT, AB. – The 6th annual Bread & Roses Gala was a sold out event at the Medicine Hat Lodge.

Natasha Carvalho the executive director of the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society said the gala was in honour of International Women’s Day, they raised $140,000 through the event.

“It’s a good opportunity to celebrate community,” she said. “It provides some awareness and education about our programs.”

Carvalho said 325 people attended the gala.

“We sold out 2 months in advance,” she said. “We were really excited to have everybody, we had a dinner, guest speaker, silent and live auction and a dance at the end.”

The money raised was a record high and Carvalho said the money will all be put back into the community.

“Anything we raise will help us off set programs and services,” she said. “We appreciate everything we can get.”

Carvalho said in Medicine Hat, they see over a thousand families per year accessing their services.

“Police respond to over 4 domestic calls a day,” she said. “That’s how many people are not in a safe place and we want to make sure that the doors are open and there are programs and services for people.”

The Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society is always looking for donations and Carvalho said they are looking for help.

“We are also happy to take peoples time, if people have time to give for volunteering that really helps us,” she said.
