City police release photos of suspects in jewelry scam
Medicine Hat, AB – Merchants in Medicine Hat are being advised to be on the alert for a theft scam that’s making the rounds.
Suspects are visiting various jewelry stores, typically in teams of two, where they ask to see a piece of jewelry.
One of the suspects talks with the merchant, while the other asks to see the item before using sleight of hand or a distraction to conceal the object. Meanwhile, the other suspect counts out or shows a large amount of cash.
The pair then say they will return with the right amount of cash, or the correct currency to complete the purchase.
They leave, taking the item with them and before the merchant realizes the box or container on the counter is now empty.
The suspects are described as having thick European accents. The man is described as approximately 30 years old, with short dark hair and a trimmed goatee.
The woman is in her late 50s and early 60s, was wearing dark clothing and has medium length dark hair.
Police released the above photos of the two suspects from the heist on Tuesday.
