Tigers complete comeback at the Canalta over Swift Current

MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Tigers came back from Swift Current looking more like tabby cats after getting smoked 6-2 by the Broncos on Friday night.

That wasn’t the story on Saturday with Medicine Hat pulling off a thrilling, come-from-behind 4-3 overtime victory thanks to Ryan Jevne. He scored two goals including the game-winning goal in extra time.

The Tigers came out strong in the first period, much better than Friday’s disastrous start, where the team went down 4-0 after 20 minutes of play.

Medicine Hat looked like the hungrier team, outshooting the Broncos 11-6 and taking a 1-0 lead to the dressing room.

Andrew Fyten set the tone early, demolishing Ryan Jevne into the boards. Jevne shook off the big hit, beating Stuart Skinner five-hole after receiving a perfect pass from Ryan Chyzowski.

The goal came with just 2:42 remaining in the first period and Swift Current’s Colby Sissons sitting in the box for slashing.

The best chance for Swift Current came on a give-away in front of the Tiger’s net. With Michael Bullion sprawled on the ice, rookie defenseman Daniel Baker somehow got his stick on the goal line, robbing the Broncos of a sure goal. It was a redemption play for Baker, who struggled in yesterday’s loss.

It didn’t take long for Swift Current to tie things up in the second period. Just 3:35 in, Glenn Gawdin unleashed a perfect wrist shot under Michael Bullion’s arm for his 51st of the season, to a rousing ovation from Broncos fans in attendance.

The Tigers responded with a flurry of chances but Skinner stood tall in net, keeping things tied at one a piece.

With about a minute left in the second, Jaeger White was sent to the box for four minutes, after drawing blood on a high sticking call. Despite the play being in Medicine Hat’s end for most of the period, the Tigers held a 24-16 shot advantage after 40 minutes of play.

The solid penalty kill for the Tigers continued in the final frame, killing off the remainder of White’s penalty. That didn’t seem to faze the Broncos, as Aleksi Heponiemi broke in all alone, snapping a shot over the glove of Michael Bullion.

That sparked Swift Current, leading to another quick goal by Russian defenseman Artyom Minulin.

With the team down by two goals, the Tigers called a time-out to try to stop the bleeding. The break seemed to refocus the Tigers, leading to a Bryan Lockner goal with 10:39 remaining to cut the Broncos lead to one.

With the Tigers pressing with just five minutes left, Elijah Brown completed the comeback, burying a rebound in front of the net. The goal seemed to rattle the Broncos, as Sissons fired the puck out of play, putting the Tigers on the powerplay.

A turnover would lead to a shorthanded Swift Current breakaway, but Bullion stood tall robbing the Broncos.

On the same powerplay, the Tigers gave up another shorthanded breakaway, leading to Bullion stymying the Broncos on a 2-on-0 with the glove hand.

The Tigers got a late chance with just under a minute left, but both teams headed to overtime tied at three-a-piece.

In the extra frame, Ryan Jevne completed the comeback with 1:53 remaining, beating Skinner and ending a thrilling game at the Canalta Centre.

The Tigers continue their short home stand on Tuesday night, as they face the Kootenay ICE.
