Mother accused of assaulting toddler also facing fraud charge

LETHBRIDGE – A 26-year-old Lethbridge woman accused of assaulting her two-year-old child, has had a fraud charge against her waived to Lethbridge Provincial Court from Medicine Hat.

Lethbridge News Now has learned that the charge of fraud under $5,000 is connected to an incident on Sept. 13, 2016, in the Medicine Hat area. In order for a charge to be waived to another location, the accused must agree to enter a guilty plea to it.

The woman cannot be named to protect the identity of her child, in connection with her local charges of assault and failing to provide the necessaries of life.

A lawyer speaking on behalf of the woman Thursday morning, Feb. 15, explained that her Lethbridge charges are close to a resolution, and asked for the Medicine Hat charge to be adjourned to her next court date on Mar. 23 so everything can be heard at the same time.

The child abuse allegations stem from an anonymous tip that came in to the Lethbridge Police Service on Sept. 21, 2017, which indicated a two-year-old child may be in danger.

An immediate welfare check was conducted by police with the assistance of Child and Family Services. They say the boy had visible injuries to his face and neck, and a further examination at the Chinook Regional Hospital revealed injuries all over his body.

Police stated that the mother said her child had fallen, but medical staff determined the injuries were not consistent with a fall.

A 32-year-old man who has also been charged in connection with the child’s injuries is currently set to appear in court Mar. 2. The woman’s lawyer has said in the past that they are waiting for a resolution in that case to help determine how they will proceed.
