GRANDE PRAIRIE, AB — A Grande Prairie Man has been charged with several child exploitation offences, and the Alberta Law Enforcement Response Team believes there may be more victims in northern Alberta, the northwest Territories, northern British Columbia and Australia.

Jonathan Karl Bruenig, 34, was arrested on January 23 at a home in Grande Prairie by RCMP, after he allegedly lured and attempted to assault a teenage boy. The offences were reported to police by a concerned relative.

ALERT’s internet Child Exploitation Unit alleges Bruenig used a number of online personas, often posing as a teenage girl on social media, to lure teenage boys. They allege his online conversations would progress from sexualized chats to sharing explicit photos and videos, and he is accused of attempt to make arrangements to meet with the boys.

He has been charged with two counts each of child luring, making child pornography, distributing child pornography and possessing child pornography. He has remained in custody since his arrest and will appear in court on February 12.

ICE is working with partner agencies in British Columbia, the Northwest Territories and Australia to investigate similar offences in those regions. Bruenig has lived in the Grande Prairie and Kelowna areas and has also been involved with a number of junior hockey teams.

ICE is also looking to identify and speak with potential victims. Anyone with information about this investigation is encouraged to call 780-509-3363 or submit information anonymously at cybertip.ca.
