CALGARY, AB – A historic night for Medicine Hat College Rattlers veteran Kennedy Werre on Friday, becoming the top rebounder in ACAC women’s basketball history.

Werre passed former teammate Mary-Jean Ritchie with her 922nd rebound against the St. Mary’s University Lightning, now sitting first place in career rebounds with 925.

It only took Werre 97 regular season games to establish the record, while Ritchie played in 106 games at the end of her ACAC career.

Unfortunately for Werre, the Rattlers weren’t able to add a win to her historic evening with an 83-43 beating at the hands of St. Mary’s.

The Lightning dominated the Rattlers over the opening 10 minutes of play, establishing a 19-9 lead over Medicine Hat.

Bench scoring came alive for Medicine Hat in the second quarter with nine points coming from their reserves, but St. Mary’s was able to add another 19 points to hold a 38-25 lead at the half.

It was 53 seconds into this quarter that Werre was able to snatch her fifth rebound of the game, breaking Ritchie’s record.

Offence completely dried up for the Rattlers in the third quarter though, only making three shots and trailing St. Mary’s 63-32 heading to the fourth quarter.

Kendell Kuntz contributed six points in the fourth, but the Rattlers suffered their third loss of the season in the process.

No Rattlers player was able to break double-digits, with Kuntz scoring a team-high nine points in the loss.

Losing their last two games in a row, Medicine Hat has slipped two points behind the SAIT Trojans for first place in their division.

Meanwhile, it was four straight wins for the Rattlers men’s basketball team after rolling to an 85-67 victory over the Lightning on Friday.

Osato Obaseki continued his red-hot play in the first quarter, going three for four from the field to help the Rattlers to a 19-15 lead.

In the second quarter, Jon Sappleton held the hot hand for Medicine Hat with four buckets and a free throw to post nine points.

Medicine Hat’s offensive production continued over to the third quarter, netting 26 points and growing their lead to 65-46.

St. Mary’s was able to post 21 points in the fourth quarter, however it wasn’t enough to erase the deficit as the Rattlers earned the 85-67 win.

Josh Magpantay led the way with 17 points for the Rattlers, as the team improved their record to 9-2 on the season.

The Rattlers return home for the first time in almost two months on Saturday, facing the Lightning in the back half of their home-and-home set.

Tip-off in the women’s game is planned for 6:00 pm, with the men’s game following at 8:00 pm.
