MEDICINE HAT, AB – The Medicine Hat College Rattlers volleyball teams are still looking for their first wins of 2018, after being swept over the weekend against the SAIT Trojans.

Both the men’s and women’s teams were coming off five-set losses to the Trojans on Friday, and were playing their first home games of the new year.

The opening set between the Rattlers and Trojans women’s team was extremely close, with neither team able to get on much of a run.

SAIT opened up a 23-20 lead late in the set, but three aces from McKenzie Griffith helped tie things up for the Rattlers again.

The Trojans proved to be too much however, rattling off a pair of big kills to take the opener 27-25.

Medicine Hat struggled in the second set with unforced errors and fatigue, which allowed the Trojans to take advantage and easily go ahead 2-0 in the match with a 25-20 victory.

In the third set, the Rattlers came out of the gates flying with a 6-1 lead over the Trojans, but SAIT was able to go on a run of their own to tie the set shortly after.

A time out was called by Medicine Hat to calm things down, but SAIT was able to build another lead to take the set 25-17 and win the match 3-0.

Shaya Suchy was named player of the match for Medicine Hat with 13 digs, while Amber Stigter was tops on her team with 10 kills on the night.

Falling to a 4-10 record on the season, the women’s team now sits four points behind the Trojans for fifth place in the ACAC South Division.

On the men’s side, the Rattlers opened up a three-point lead late in their first set against SAIT, but the Trojans were able to rally following a time out to take the opener 25-23.

The second set proved to be another tight affair with Medicine Hat and SAIT exchanging blows, but the Trojans were able to capitalize on a handful of Rattlers errors to jump ahead 2-0 with a 25-23 win.

Alfred Dalevik helped close the gap in the third set with a service run, while the Rattlers were able to erase a SAIT lead on match point and tie the game at 24-24.

The powerhouse Trojans were able to take control shortly after however, sweeping the match with a 29-27 win in the final set.

Medicine Hat only had 33 kills on the night, with Vitor Pereiira posting a team-high nine.

Dropping to a 9-5 record, the Rattlers are now part of a four-way tie for second place in the South Division with Red Deer College, Briercrest College, and Lethbridge College behind SAIT.

Home games ahead for both Rattlers teams next weekend, as they host Briercrest for double-headers on Friday and Saturday.
