MEDICINE HAT, AB — Parents have two chances to speak with members of the Medicine Hat Catholic Board of Education about the possible closure of one of their schools.

The board will be hosting a public information meeting on Monday from 6:30 – 8 p.m. at École St. Thomas d’Aquin (1970 19 Avenue SE), giving parents and community members the opportunity to provide their opinion and feedback about a potential closure of École St. Thomas d’Aquin.

During the board meeting on Dec. 12, trustees voted to consider closing the school, and moving the French immersion program at St. Thomas to St. John Paul II School, which is under construction and set to be open in time for the 2018-2019 school year.

The school, which has 128 students enrolled this year, is in need of repairs and upgrades costing upwards of $2.5 million.

Written submissions about the proposed closure will be accepted during the meeting. Those submissions can be emailed to communications@mhcbe.ab.ca, faxed to 403-529-0917 or dropped off in person to the board office at 1251 First Avenue SW on Monday.

The proposed closure will also be discussed during the regular board meeting on Tuesday at the Catholic board office at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend.
