Bantam Tigers end losing skid versus AAA Sabres

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Goals were hard to come by at the Hockey Hounds Recreation Centre on Saturday afternoon, but the SEAC Bantam AAA Tigers managed to pull off their first league victory in over a month.

Taking on the CNHA AAA Sabres out of Calgary, the Tigers had suffered four consecutive losses with their last win coming on November 4 against the Calgary AAA Flames.

Dean Spak got the scoring started for the Sabres midway through the first period on the power play, but the Tigers came alive in the second with goals from Roman Cherniak and Caleb Wyrostok to give SEAC a 2-1 lead after 40 minutes.

Tigers netminder Marek Andres was rock solid for SEAC with a 41-save performance, helping the Tigers to a 2-1 victory.

Head coach Jason Bartram said the team played a great game at both ends of the ice.

“We got a couple of good breaks and got a lead going into the third,” said Bartram. “And then, [we] continued to play tough in our end. Our goaltender was good, kids were blocking shots, and doing all the little things we had to do. So, it was nice to get the two points.”

Facing another Calgary team on Sunday, the 6-10-2 Tigers hit the road to face off against the AAA Bisons at 1:45 pm.

Not quite the same result for the SEAC Midget 15 club on Saturday in Edmonton, facing the Knights of Columbus Centennials and trying to break a losing streak of their own.

The Centennials jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the opening seven minutes with goals from Jonathan Fung and Alex Wlasichuk, before the Tigers countered with Brady Dovichak marker before the end of the frame.

Kyler Steinhauer-Morin scored for the Knights of Columbus early in the second, but that goal was quickly erased by Tigers forward Quade Hughson a few minutes later.

SEAC’s Ryoma Hernandez tied up the game at 3-3 with 5:26 left in the second, however the Centennials potted a pair of goals late in the frame from Brooks Robinson and Logan Acheson to take a 5-3 lead.

The Tigers threw 16 shots at Centennials goalie Nathan Blatt in the third but couldn’t solve him, losing their sixth straight game 5-3.

Occupying last place in the AMMHL’s South Division, the Tigers will try to improve on their 2-15-1 record on Sunday when they hit the ice in Sherwood Park against the NIC Squires.
