AIRDRIE, AB – The Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs had no answers for Andrew McLennan and the Airdrie Thunder on Friday night, losing their fourth straight contest 3-1.

Coming into Friday’s contest in Airdire, the Cubs had lost five of their last six contests and were looking to right the ship against the North Division’s top team.

Medicine Hat dominated with 24 shots in the first period alone, but it was a scoreless game after 20 minutes of play.

It stayed 0-0 until the midway mark of the second, when Airdrie veteran McLennan scored in his first game of the season to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead.

Airdrie added another just before the end of the period, as McLennan got his second of the game past Martyn Clift to put Airdrie up 2-0 despite being outshot at the intermission.

Entering their sixth period without scoring a goal, Medicine Hat finally broke through with a Matt Clement marker at the 10:25 mark of the third to cut the Airdrie lead to a single goal.

The Cubs pushed in the third with 20 shots but couldn’t break Ryan Simpson, with McLennan completing the hat-trick on an empty net to send Medicine Hat to their fourth consecutive loss 3-1.

Simpson was a man possessed on Friday, only allowing one goal on 53 Cubs shots to add another win to his totals.

As for Clift, he was handed his first loss in a Cubs uniform but was still able to make 42 saves on the evening.

Medicine Hat continues to sit in the basement of the South Division standings, holding a record of 6-10 and 12 points.

It’s back to the Kinplex for the Cubs on Saturday night, as they tangle with the Cochrane Generals at 7:45 pm.
