MEDICINE HAT, AB — After five months of going missing in Medicine Hat and area, a dog is back in the care of the SPCA.

Jingles, a dog the SPCA was caring for, disappeared in June while walking with the family that adopted her. The dog was spotted around the city at several points, but eventually the sightings stopped.

“We did have sightings of her for about a week on and off and we couldn’t get anywhere close to her. She went into fight or flight mode, and she was definitely in flight,” said Medicine Hat SPCA Executive Director Katie Ayres.

However, five months after she went missing, Jingles was found safe and sound on a farm outside of Medicine Hat with the help of K9 Recovery Services, and is now back in the care of the SPCA.

Ayres said they will not be putting Jingles up for adoption until they can get her used to being inside a home.

“One of the challenges that the previous adopter had was that when they went to take her into the house, she would put the brakes on at the door,” said Ayres.

Jingles came to the shelter from a Northern Alberta reserve. Ayres added she spent most of her time outdoors, likely hunting for food or eating what people put out for her. A home environment is not something she’s used to, so Ayres said a SPCA staff member plans to foster Jingles until she’s ready for adoption.

CHAT News Today spoke with the SPCA about Jingles and the story of her escape.
