CANMORE, AB – For the first time since November 1, 2013, the Canmore Eagles (10-13-1) beat the Brooks Bandits (16-8-1) in regulation, scoring twice in the first period and never looking back in a 4-1 win at the Canmore Recreation Centre on Saturday night.

The win keeps the Bandits 6 points back of Okotoks for first place in the AJHL South division, with three extra games played.

Despite a 12-8 Bandit shot advantage and early power play advantage in the first period, Canmore tallied twice; the first a Colton Young shot from the slot at 14:12, and the second a one-timer by Tian Rask from the top of the crease on a power play at 17:20.

In the second, the Eagles added a second power play marker when Young notched his second of the game on a screen shot from the high slot. Special teams were a key difference, with both teams having eight man advantages, but only Canmore converting with its two power play goals.

In the third, the Bandits made things interesting when a Matt Cassidy (Medford, NJ) attempt from the right side of the Canmore net deflected by rookie goaltender Logan Dyck and over the goal line to cut the deficit to two, but it would be the only blemish on the Eagle backup’s night as he stopped 32 of 33 shots. Jake Ashton added the empty netter with a shot from his own blue line with 24 seconds left in the game to notch the 4-1 final score.

Mitch Benson (Windsor, ON) made 25 saves on 28 shots in the losing effort in his 25th consecutive start to open the season.

The Bandits now prepare for three consecutive home games next week, beginning Tuesday against the first-place Okotoks Oilers at 7:00 PM at the Centennial Regional Arena, featuring the team’s first-ever Twofer Tuesday, with 2-for-1 and $3 drinks at the bar. It will also feature the debut of the team’s Hat Trick Giveaway, where fans who come to all three home games in the week and get their Hat Trick Card stamped will be entered in a draw to win a Cale Makar signed Colorado Avalanche jersey.
