MEDICINE HAT, AB –  CHAT 94.5 hit the road today with a bus full of volunteers to collect donated food items and cash for their 18th annual food drive.

They have been cruising around the city and stopping at businesses and schools to collect donations. At the end of the drive on Wednesday, the crew has collected 150,406 pounds of food, all of which will go to the Medicine Hat and District Food Bank.

Chat 94.5 Program Director Mike Doll said he looks forward to the event each year, and it’s inspiring to see the community rally for those in need.

“We’ve had some tough times in our economy. We’ve had a lot of people that have been down on their luck. It’s really a community effort to give everybody a hand back up with the Medicine Hat Food Bank. We can always count on Medicine Hat to show up, and they do everytime,” said Doll.

Last year the crew collected a record high 208,000 pounds of food donations. With one more day left to go in the food drive, they may surpass that number this year.

Medicine Hat and District Food Bank Co-Executive Director Celina Symmonds joined the volunteers as they visited multiple locations across the city. She said the food bank is grateful for the community’s support.

“We help 85 families a day, and so 208,000 pounds of food goes a long way. And when they donate cash we can buy three times what you can buy at the grocery store. So that money goes a long way feeding families in our community,” said Symmonds.

Symmonds added that the food drive is their largest fundraiser of the year.
