Firefighters reminding residents to stay off the ice

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Firefighters are warning people to stay off the ice on the South Saskatchewan River after a 911 call earlier this week.

A passerby called for help when they saw a couple of kids out on the ice Monday.

While no one was hurt in the incident, firefighters say it’s a dangerous thing to do.

The fire department deals with all river and water rescues in the city. Although firefighters train extensively in aquatic rescue, they say they never want to have to put their training to use.

Fire prevention officer Grayson Smith said the ice on the river can be especially dangerous because it doesn’t freeze solid and you never know what you’re stepping on.

“The ice packs so you’re going to have areas where it’s thicker, areas where it’s thinner, the water in constantly moving underneath it. You really have no idea, you could step in one spot and it could be fine, the next spot you could fall through.” explained Smith.

“It’s so unpredictable and that’s why we just, all around, encourage people not to go on the ice at all.”

Firefighters are encouraging parents to talk to their kids about safety around the river and ice.
