CALGARY, AB – A Calgary man accused of stabbing his ex-girlfriend to death appeared in court for the first time today.

Kevin Rubletz, 33, is facing second degree murder charges after he allegedly stabbed Jessica Newman 75 times in March 2015.

Crown prosecutor Shane Parker says the couple had a “tortured love,” and were embroiled in a custody battle over their son.

According to Global News, jurors heard that Newman’s DNA was present in Rubletz’s van, which was found at an auto wrecker.

The Crown says it has evidence that suggests Rubletz killed Newman and dumped her body in a rural area near Airdrie, AB. A work crew found Newman’s body nearly two months later.

Rubletz has been in custody since June 26, 2015. The trial continues into Tuesday.
