Some homeowners handing out more tricks than treats

MEDICINE HAT, AB — A handful of homeowners around the city have brought their yards back to life. From the dead, that is.

“We have a cremation oven, we have an autopsy table, a coffin, a little morgue setup and a very huge candy table,” said Terrance Moore.

His Aberdeen Street address is known around the neighbourhood come this time of year for.

“We’ve been here 12 years now,” he said. “It actually started off just me sitting on the porch in a rain suit and it’s escalated into this.”

Jody Enns lives a few blocks over on Seventh Street Southwest. The self-proclaimed “Pinterest fanatic” began decorating last month, even adding a handcrafted electric chair. But it seemed Mother Nature was giving out more tricks than treats this year.

“I started in the third week in September, and with all the storms we’ve had and stuff like that, its been non-stop maintenance,” he said, adding he had to redo his display five times.

“We had to come down and take down probably about half of the display,” said Brandon Sackman, who has a display set up at his home in Crescent Heights. “Just, the wind was so bad, it was blowing over the entrance over there, it actually fell right over.”

Sackman is thankful the wind wasn’t quite strong enough to blow his two hearses’ away, or the coffin he has setup in his yard.

Each homeowner promises more than a few scares, and treats, once the sun goes down.
