MEDICINE HAT, AB – A warm welcome back to the Kinplex for the Medicine Hat Travelodge Cubs (2-0) on Saturday night, winning their home opener over the Stettler Lightning with a strong third period.

The Cubs were looking to maintain a strong start to the 2017-18 HJHL season, after defeating the Mountainview Colts in overtime last weekend in their season opener.

Medicine Hat went to the power play midway through the first period but it was Stettler making the home team pay, as Lightning rookie Erik Rost converted shorthanded to make it a 1-0 Stettler lead.

It was still a 1-0 game with 3:59 left in the second period, when Brendan Bardwell added to Stettler’s strong special teams with a power play goal to boost his team’s lead to 2-0 heading to the intermission.

The Cubs went to work early in the third, with Mackenzie Fritzler scoring his third goal in two games to get Medicine Hat on the board with 17:41 left in regulation.

Deklan Steward found the equalizer for Medicine Hat near the midway mark of the third period, scoring his first as a Cub on the power play and making it a 2-2 game.

The comeback was completed with 9:09 left in the contest, thanks to a big goal from rookie Kian Simonson to vault Medicine Hat into the lead for the first time.

Cubs goaltender T.J. Goldie was a brick wall from there helping to kill off a five-minute major and game misconduct to Kaidin Hodgson, securing a 3-2 win for Medicine Hat in front of around 750 supporters.

Goldie was rock solid in his first career start with the Cubs, stopping 22 of the 24 shots he faced on the night.

Starting the season at 2-0, the Cubs join the Red Deer Vipers as the only undefeated teams in the HJHL so far.

It’s a quick turnaround for Medicine Hat, as they return to the Kinplex ice on Sunday afternoon for a rematch with Mountainview.

Puck drop is scheduled for 2:15 pm.
