Gerlach shines, Tigers knock off Blades 6-2

SASKATOON, SK — It was a night to remember for Max Gerlach.

The 19-year-old Texan exploded with a pair of goals in the first period, and added a couple helpers, as the Medicine Hat Tigers rolled over the Saskatoon Blades 6-2 at the SaskTel Centre on Friday night.

Captain Mark Rassell also tickled the twine on two occasions, extending his scoring streak to three games. Cole Clayton scored his first career WHL marker, and Ryan Jevne rounded out an offensively impressive night for Medicine Hat with his first goal of the season.

The Tigers are now 2-1 on the early campaign, while the Blades continue to hunt down their first victory after falling to Swift Current to open the season.

Gerlach’s goals came just over three minutes apart in the first period, giving the Tigers a 2-0 advantage through 20 minutes of play.

Rassell extended the Tigers lead to three on a powerplay goal assisted by David Quenneville and Gerlach. That ended up being the game winning goal, with Jevne and Clayton each finding the mesh less than four minutes later.

Rassell’s second of the night came with 13 second remaining in the middle frame, with Gerlach collecting the lone helper to give him four points on the night. 

Saskatoon collected goals from Chase Wouters and Gage Ramsay, both of which were their first’s of the season in the third period.

Michael Bullion stopped 21 of 23 shots fired his way to collect his second victory of the season, while Blades netminder Ryan Kubic stopped 11 of 16 shots before Joel Grzybowski came in to stop 15 of 16.

Special teams was another strong point for Medicine Hat, scoring a pair of powerplay goals on four opportunities. They also held the Blades scoreless on three of their own powerplays.

The Tigers wrap up a mini road trip Saturday night in Prince Albert, taking on the Raiders at 7:00pm.
