MEDICINE HAT, AB — A fire at a heritage home in the city Tuesday morning is being treated as suspicious, and the Major Crimes Unit has taken over the investigation.

The investigation remains in its very early stages, and police did not have any more information to share Tuesday afternoon.

The investigation stems after firefighters from all three stations in Medicine Hat were called to the historic Tweed House, located at Division Avenue and First Street Southeast.

Firefighters were able to save the majority of the structure within two hours, with the damage being confined to the roof, the attic, the west side of the home, and the interior. There is no estimate yet on total damage to the home.

The home was under renovations when the fire occurred, and Deputy Chief Brian Webster says the renovations may have help prevent the spread of fire to neighbouring properties.

“As the construction was going on, he used a lot of fire resistant material, which was really nice that he did that,” he said. “(There was) a little fire resistant siding on the exterior, which probably limited the flame spread, the fire spread. Of course, by limiting the spread, it doesn’t go across to the neighbour’s houses.”

Webster adds there was fire-resistant insulation in the attic, which also helped contain the spread of the fire.

There were no injuries in the fire.

The story will be updated when more information is available.
