MAPLE CREEK, SASK. — A ranch located near Maple Creek has received Provincial Heritage distinction by the Province of Saskatchewan.

The Historic W.D. and Alice Reesor Ranch was named a Provincial Heritage Property, the 52nd such distinction in Saskatchewan, and the first ranch in Saskatchewan to receive the designation.

“We see it as an honour to the family, the Cypress Hills community and the province, being the first ranch in Saskatchewan to be designated,”said Theresa Reesor, current resident and operator of the ranch, said in a statement. “We have been here 20 years, and our focus has always been on emphasizing the history of the family and of ranching in Saskatchewan and in Cypress Hills. It has been part of our mandate to tell the story and keep it alive.”

“This property tells the story of a family’s life on a Saskatchewan ranch for more than 100 years,” said Gene Makowsky, Parks, Culture and Sport Minister, in a statement. “This story will help future generations to understand the historical significance of the ranching industry in our province.”

The designated portion of the cattle ranch includes the ranch house, several sheds and barns, and several natural landscape elements. The ranch was founded in 1904, and the main buildings were built between 1906 and 1916, and display original construction and functionality, though there have been modifications by the family over the years as the ranching industry and family life have evolved.

Today, the buildings remain as the headquarters of the family’s ranching operations and a bed and breakfast business.
