Ball hockey player named to national team for third time

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Andrew Carmichael is celebrating an incredible milestone.

The local ball hockey player has recently become the only Canadian player to earn a spot on the last three national junior teams.

Three years ago, Carmichael played defence with the U-16 team, where he won silver. Last year, on the U18 team, he helped Canada to a gold medal, alongside fellow Hatter Tavin Straub.

He will continue to represent Canada next summer at the Junior World Ball Hockey Championships, this time with the U20 team.

“It feels good,” Carmichael said. “There’s probably nothing better than going for a third time.

“I was excited when I represented with U16 and U18, but representing for a third time, going for a gold, there is not a better feeling, ever.”

Earlier this summer, Carmichael, along with several Hatters, represented Alberta at the national championship. He was the one local player picked for the U20 national team.

Carmichael says although he wont be playing with Straub, there are several players he played with on last year’s team, which will help him develop chemistry.

Team Canada will converge next August in St. John’s, Newfoundland, to compete for the championship.

“I just want to play my best, and come out with a medal at least,” he said. “But always, gold is the goal.”
