Alberta BMX Provincials rip through Medicine Hat

MEDICINE HAT, AB – Alberta’s top BMX racers of all ages converged on Medicine Hat over the weekend to wind up the 2017 provincial season.

The Alberta Grands and Provincial Championships went at the local BMX track next to the Family Leisure Centre with two days of racing being held.

It’s estimated around 530 racers hit the track over the weekend, with many families joining the competitors and camping in the parking lot.

The final stop on the 2017 tour, this was the second largest BMX event in the province this year. Heats were quick, with multiple races being run on the dirt track at the same time.

Medicine Hat BMX Club president Amber Harnett said it’s special to see the weekend be such a success after almost a year of planning.

“It’s emotional, absolutely emotional,” said Harnett. “I’m so proud for Medicine Hat as a community. We are one of the only two tracks in southern Alberta besides Lethbridge, so we have such a huge, beautiful compound. All of our volunteers do 100% of the work here.”

Riders under the age of nine-years-old were the youngest to compete, while the adult elite class was able to rip through the many hill and turns at the track.

11-year-old Taylor Boll was down with the Red Deer BMX Club, and said the Medicine Hat track presented quite the challenge.

“It’s really long,” said Boll. “After the second straight, your legs get tired.”

Harnett said the BMX community continues to grow in the Medicine Hat area, especially due to the success of some of their local riders.

“We have the same families that travel around all summer long, for like the past five, six, seven years,” said Harnett. “To see them progressing to the point where it’s just… you can’t believe. They’re racing in the United States, we have a lot of racers that race the B.C. series, USA BMX.”

While the dry conditions made maintaining the dirt track a challenge, Harnett added the volunteer effort over the weekend helped keep the track in great shape and the event successful.
