MEDICINE HAT, AB – After four months of heats, the 2017 racing season came to a close over the weekend at the Medicine Hat Speedway.

The final slate of races for the year were held on Saturday evening, along with the final chance for drivers to capture valuable points in the overall standings.

All six classes competed on Saturday, with a strong attendance from Medicine Hat area residents at the race track.

In the renegade trucks division, Wayne Seaward took a sizable lead into the championship heat.

Avoiding a large crash midway through the final race, Seaward drove to another first place finish and the renegade trucks division title. Curtis Bigelow and Glen Young finished in second and third, which was where the finished in the season standings as well.

Mitch Stovka and Alf Hieb were neck and neck in the elite street stocks division entering Saturday’s races, with Stovka winning over the weekend and taking the championship trophy. Hieb took home the silver medal, while bronze was awarded to Will Voth.

In hobby stocks, Jason Koska came across the finish line in third place on Saturday but had enough points to win the overall title. Trevor Stratton was named runner-up for hobby stocks, with Jareme Koska being crowned in third place.

IMCA modified division honours went to Justin McTavish, after he drove to a first place finish over Merl Fitzpatrick and Ross Statham on Saturday. Statham finished the year in second place to McTavish, while Steve Kundert took home third.

Dale Edwards outlasted Robyn Abel to win the final baby grands race, and was able to win the overall division by 42 points over Rick Jondreau and Abel.

And in the evolution cupcars class, Owen Harbour defeated Emma Fitzpatrick and Faith Luther on Saturday to win the final race. However, Luther was able to gather enough points to win the division by eight points.

The 2018 season will launch in the spring, while a season-ending banquet will be held for drivers on October 7 at the Clarion Hotel.
