MEDICINE HAT, AB. –  On Wednesday a passerby heard noise coming from a dumpster in the city of Medicine Hat, AB. A 2.5 month old kitten was discovered locked inside a cat carrier.

Kaylee Getz, the Animal Services Manager at APARC said A bylaw officer brought the abandoned kitten to their centre and she is doing well.

“She was a good weight, her coat looked fine, she was pretty shaken up, pretty nervous, she didn’t really like to be handled or touched to much. She’s still getting used to us now,” she said.

Getz said although the circumstances of the rescued kitten are upsetting, these situations aren’t uncommon.

“It happens more often than we would hope, the dumpster was a new one for us, last week we had 3 kittens brought in by a lady who found them on her doorstep in a box,” she explained.

Dr. Jennifer Flaig of the Cypress View Veterinary Clinic, said that there are many dangers to abandoning a pet, especially if they are trapped in a confined space.

“They can become dehydrated, they’re not getting food and it’s very very stressful on them as well, physically and psychologically and animals who become stressed are more susceptible to developing diseases,” she explained.

Dr. Flag said there are many places pet owners can take their pets if they are no longer able to care for them.

“The SPCA is a good place, there is also APARC you know you can take them there as well. Most veterinary clinics will also take relinquished animals. We’ve taken some here in fact, and then we work with some of those agencies to get them into shelters and find them homes,” she said.

Getz said APARC has already had a number of calls from people who have heard the rescued kitten’s story and would like to give her a new home.
