MEDICINE HAT, AB — A man arrested a year ago in connection with an attempted child luring has entered a guilty plea in Medicine Hat provincial court on Wednesday.

Lawrence Oliver Evans pleaded guilty to one count of child luring.

Evans, 54, was arrested after attempting to lure an 11-year-old Medicine Hat girl online in March 2016.

The girl’s parents intervened prior to the meeting, and observed him at the location leaving in his vehicle.

Evans was arrested in May following a police investigation.

In court Wednesday, Evans received a one year jail sentence, but was given credit for 129 days served, meaning he will serve 236 days in jail. He also received three years probation and was fined $100.

As part of his probation, he is restricted from contacting his victims, cannot possess electronic devices capable of accessing the internet, and cannot be within a one-block radius of a school or community centre where children under 16 attend, among other conditions. He is also required to register as a sex offender for 10 years.
