Teenager drowns in Lake Newell Tuesday afternoon

BROOKS, AB – A 16-year-old boy is dead after drowning in Lake Newell Tuesday afternoon.

According to a news release from the RCMP, EMS, the Brooks Fire Department and the Brooks RCMP were called to Kinbrook Island Provincial Park at 3:44 p.m. after receiving reports of a possible drowning at the main beach.

RCMP say the teen was floating on the lake when he appeared to jump off of his floatation device. According to the release, the male appeared to be in distress prior to going under water.

Southeastern Alberta Search and Rescue, Alberta Parks, the Medicine Hat Fire Department Aquatic Rescue Team and HALO Air Ambulance also responded to the incident.

The body of the boy has been recovered and the family has been notified.
