SWIFT CURRENT, SASK. — The Swift Current 57s have successfully defended the Western Major Baseball League Championship.

In a rematch from last year’s WMBL finals, the 57s defeated the Edmonton Prospects 4-0 at Mitchell Field Thursday night to win the series 3-2.

Matt Bondarchuk, Blake Adams, Mason Brown and Cole Thibideau all batted in runs for Swift Current through the game.

Matt Michalski pitched the full nine innings, allowing only five hits and striking out six batters.

Scott Gillespie was the losing pitcher for the Prospects. In six innings, he allowed three runs, eight hits and walked three batters. Andrew Mirasty and Matt Brisson pitched for the Prospects in the final innings.

Thursday’s victory gives Swift Current their sixth WMBL championship since 2001, and the first under the 57s banner (the team changed its name from the Indians to the 57s in January).
