Brian Jean makes big promises in new policy document

Edmonton — Former Wildrose Party Leader Brian Jean has released his policy document called “Protecting Freedom and Democracy,” making some big promises should he become leader of the new United Conservative Party, and Premier in the next provincial election.

One of those promises will be to hold localized referendums applicable to municipalities who use photo radar. Only four of 10 provinces currently use photo radar, and Alberta is the only province to do so outside of construction and school zones.

Jean says if elected, it would occur during the next municipal election or sooner. He says he would also pass recall legislation, work to fix equalization, protect free speech on university campuses and ban the use of union dues for partisan activities.

Some of the other highlights in his plan include ensuring MLAs are free to vote according to their constituents’ interests, restoring the secret ballot for union certification, and banning government spending announcements and advertising during elections and by-elections.

The Wildrose and Progressive Conservative parties merged over the weekend and a convention will be held October 28 to elect a new leader.
