MEDICINE HAT, AB — Several members of the Medicine Hat Police Service will be swapping their patrol cars for a mountain bike for the next two months.

The High Visibility Response Team season begins on Friday. The team is made up of five members of the service’s Community Safety Unit, who have completed specialized training by the Law Enforcement Bike Association.

This year, the team’s focus is balancing enforcement with crime prevention, with the goal of providing a presence downtown, in parks and on pathways and any other areas of concern that are identified. Some areas of focus for the team include downtown loitering, community safety and graffiti issues.

The team will also provide attention to Echo Dale Regional Park, Kin Coulee Park, the skate park and water parks around the city.

Throughout the summer, community engagement will also be a focus. The team is expected to be present at Canada Day, the Medicine Hat Stampede, Alive After 5 and the Downtown Chili Cook-off. Members have also received many requests for demonstrations at summer camps, and will attempts to complete as many as possible.

Members of the team will also hand out “tickets” to youth who are exhibiting positive behaviour, including wearing proper biking attire.

The team is active until late August.
